Star Fox (Switch 2) Expert Mode

Expert is Star Fox on Switch 2's endgame challenge — one of the game's three difficulty levels, and the one completionists chase. It's not just a stat bump; enemy aggression and density spike, so the fundamentals from the controls guide become non-negotiable.

How to unlock it

Collect medals across the campaign. Once you've earned enough, Expert difficulty unlocks. Use the medals tracker so you don't lose track of which missions still owe you — and practice in Challenge Mode, which also runs on Expert.

What changes on Expert

• Enemies are faster and fire denser laser walls.
• Many foes take extra hits, and some waves add more enemies.
• Bosses are tankier and more punishing — patterns are the same, but mistakes cost more.
• Score lines for Expert medals are brutal; survival is the real test.

Survival rules

1. Barrel roll on reflex. Tap the roll button twice through every laser volley — see controls.
2. Charge everything. Lock-on charged shots end threats before they swarm you.
3. Use mouse aiming. Joy-Con 2 mouse mode snaps onto weak points fast — vital on Expert.
4. Protect wingmates harder. They die faster here, and you still need them alive for medals.
5. Learn boss tells cold. Review the boss guide so you never trade hits.

Toughest stages on Expert

• Area 6 — already the hardest medal gauntlet; on Expert it's a wall. Roll constantly and prioritize the gate turrets.
• Venom 2 — the true-ending Star Wolf rematch and Andross true form are merciless. Somersault to keep targets in front.
• Zoness — dense ground targets plus the Katt rescue; bait clusters for charged shots.

A clean approach

Run the hard route on Normal for practice, grind specific stages in Challenge Mode, and only go for Expert medals once you can clear each mission comfortably.
